Duncan Liddel
(1961 – 2025)
The Heriot’s Rugby community sadly lost one of it’s most colourful, positive characters last Friday when Duncan peacefully passed away in Inverclyde Hospital, Greenock. Duncan had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer less than a month ago.
Educated at George Heriot’s from 1966 to 1979 Duncan was a regular in the school 1st XV and school athletics team. He was happy to play in any position on the rugby field or compete in any event on the athletics track for the team. His forte was, however, the obstacle race on games day and he won this event every year he took part.
On leaving school Duncan joined the rugby club and toured California with the Cavaliers, as well as Vancouver. He was in the successful Heriot’s Under 20 Sevens team that won their own tournament at Goldenacre and whilst only getting a handful of games in the 1st XV he was a regular in the 2nd and 2A XV’s playing either in the back row or centre.
Having started working in the advertising industry Duncan’s career changed direction. He decided to go to college and qualified as a fitness instructor. Whilst at college he met Angie, who he later married and both of them worked at the Sportscotland National Sports Training Centre in Largs.
Everyone at Goldenacre sends their sincere condolences to Angie, Sami their daughter, and John, Duncan’s brother, at this difficult time.
Duncan’s funeral will take place at Clyde Crematorium, KA24 5LE on Tuesday 21st October 2025 at 11.00 am.

Super character who always had something positive to say that would encourage those in his company.
John, I know too well that you will always miss your big brother, but also cherish your memories of shared times.
