Heriot’s Rugby Super Series Head Coach, Ben Cairns has unveiled his squad ahead of the FOSROC Super Series Sprint, beginning next week.
Heriot’s Rugby’s first game of the Sprint Series is a home game against Edinburgh Rugby ‘A’ Saturday, 8 April with kick off at 5pm.
Ben has carefully selected his squad and, along with his team taken his players to “dark places” to help them prepare for the upcoming Sprint Series.
Ben Cairns said: “I am delighted to be at the stage where we are naming the group that will take us through the FOSROC Super Series Sprint and beyond. We are really happy with the balance in the group. We have a great mix of players who will wear the Heriot’s jersey for the first time and guys who know exactly what it means to put it on. We’ve also got a great blend of young up and coming guys with players who know what is required at this level.
We’ve had a large proportion of the group in with us since mid-February while others will trickle in as their club and university commitments finish. We’ve got a brilliant start to the season on the horizon and we cannot wait to get into match action.”
Whilst the squad is retaining 16 players from the previous season, new players coming into the squad include: Cairn Ramsay (Currie Chieftains), Euan McVie (Edinburgh Accies), Cameron Cobbett (Hartpury), Wallace Nelson (Southern Knights), Cameron Jones (Ayrshire Bulls), Euan McAra (Glasgow Hawks), Liam Richman (Queanbeyan Whites, Canberra, Australia), Aidan Boyle (Durham University), Matt Davidson (Scotland 7s), Grant Hughes (Scotland 7s) and Mikey Gray (returns from US).
The upcoming season sees several Heriot’s Blues Men players moving from the amateur side to the part-time professional squad, namely Charlie Jupp, Sam Wallace (who was long-term injury cover in the Championship last year). To date, Heriot’s Rugby has seen nine of the Heriot’s Blues Men progress onto the part-time professional side.
Many players have featured for Edinburgh and Glasgow over the last 18 months as the pathway continues to develop with the likes of Bruce Houston successfully gaining his contract with Edinburgh Rugby during the last Championship.
Every team in the FOSROC Super Series have five contracted Academy players aligned to the clubs, Heriot’s Rugby players include: Dan Gamble, Matt Russell, Ben Evans, Jacob Henry & Nathan Sweeney.
For their pre-season game, Heriot’s Rugby will head to Myreside for Friday night lights on Friday 31st March 2023, KO 7.45pm.
Heriot’s Rugby have their first home game on Saturday, 8 August against Edinburgh Rugby ‘A’ with kick off at 5pm. Let’s #GetBacktoGoldie in style, with the first pre-match lunch of the season lunch can be ordered here and tickets can be bought from Citizen Ticket.
