Former Scotland international Megan Gaffney has stepped into her latest challenge as the new Director of Rugby – Women at Heriot’s Rugby Club ahead of the 24/25 season.

Bringing experience from an international rugby career across 7s and XVs, including Rugby World Cup 2021 (played 2022), Commonwealth Games 2022 and Great Britain 7s Olympic training squad honours, Megan will oversee the progress of the Heriot’s Rugby Women and associated pathway development.

Having played for Heriot’s Rugby Club since January 2023, Megan has been taking on other opportunities to advocate for the development of women’s rugby after recently recovering from shoulder surgery.

Earlier this year Megan was the Scotland representative at the launch of the first British and Irish Lions Women’s Tour, which will take place in New Zealand in September 2027.

When playing for the national squad we talked a lot about ‘inspiring the next generation’ and I’ve always wanted to push the women’s game forward for those players coming after me,” she said.

While you are playing at the top level you are the face of the game but don’t have much time to do much else. Now I can put the time and effort into building those pathways for other players.

I am still really keen to give back to rugby at the grassroots level. For me doing that behind the scenes from a more strategic point of view really appealed to me.

As newest Director on the Heriot’s Rugby Club Board, Megan has ambitions for Goldenacre to nurture emerging talent onto the international stage, while also being a club that players commit to for their entire rugby career.

We are the newest club in Edinburgh in the Women’s Premier League and the growth we have had over the past five years has been phenomenal. I want this club to be a place where players come to realise their rugby goals.

In her new post Megan wants to continue moving Heriot’s Rugby Women forward through building the squad and support around it.

I believe Heriot’s Rugby Club has huge potential to be one of the leading clubs in Scottish women’s rugby, not only with their performances, but in the whole club’s attitude towards the women’s game. I’d like to be part of making it a reality,” she said.

I want to focus on recruiting quality for Heriot’s Rugby Women. As a club I would like us to challenge current attitudes in women’s sport and drive for quality across all teams at Goldenacre.”
