Alan M Horn January 1949 – April 2022

It is with great sadness that we advise of the death of Herioter Alan Horn on 15th April who many will have known for his role as our International Ticket Secretary for the last 20 years.  Alan retired from his ticketing duties in October 2021 due to ill-health and was in and out of hospital since.

Alan Horn was born in Edinburgh in January 1949 and was brought up in Liberton. A Quantity Surveyor by profession Alan married Maureen, a mathematics teacher, and they had two sons Gavin and Gregor both of whom are now married with grandchildren. Gregor still stays in Edinburgh and Gavin is now in Cambridge.

Alan’s connection with Heriot’s was through his sons who both attended George Heriot’s School. He himself then joined Heriot’s Rugby Club as a supporter in 1995 going on to volunteer in different roles within the club, the most significant and longest term being as our Club International Ticket Secretary for almost 20 years. We were fortunately able to pass our thanks to Alan for his great contribution to Heriot’s Rugby Club prior to his death, however, are really saddened that he was unable to enjoy his “retirement” from the club in a role as purely a “supporter” once more.

Sadly Maureen, Alan’s wife, was relatively recently was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and taken into care.  Alan’s death is a huge loss to the club and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

The funeral takes place on Friday 20th May in Liberton Kirk at 2.00pm, with refreshments afterwards in the church hall. All are welcome.

  1. I first met Alan when I was secretary and general manager of the club. Running a top-class club like Heriot’s depends on lots of volunteers to perform myriad important functions and Alan was always willing to help where he could. His outstanding service as International tickets secretary has been priceless. Alan was one of a number of Non-Heriot Dads whose sons were pupils at the school. Alan told me that he and many other Dads, grateful for their boy’s education , felt that they could put something back into the Heriot community by helping out at the FP rugby club . Well they certainly do that and Alan has been a stalwart over the last 20 years or so. Alan will be greatly missed.

  2. It has been an absolute privilege to know Alan, both as a good friend of a similar age and through sharing the same involvement in Heriot’s as a parent of two boys who attended the School and then became a fellow volunteer for the Rugby Club. We worked together on making sure that international tickets were purchased, allocated and then accounted for in the financial records. It was a tricky operation but Alan’s meticulous approach ensured that everyone was satisfied and the books balanced!
